The Thirteenth Annual Western History Symposium

The Thirteenth Annual Western History Symposium

Historians, educators and authors will be at the 13th annual Western History Symposium to talk about all things relevant to Arizona’s western heritage.

The Western History Symposium is an annual event featuring informative presentations related to a variety of western subjects such as honky tonks, brothels, mining camps; and entertainment on the frontier.

The all-day event consists of hour-long presentations from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. An evening presentation will be held in conjunction with the regular monthly dinner meeting of the Corral.

Another topic for presentation will be Annie Neal, the Black Cherokee princess who hosted royalty and the rich and famous at her luxurious Arizona hotel.

Arizona and the Medal of Honor – from the Indian War to VietNam will make up another presentation.

If you’re interested in baseball, you’ll want to join us to hear about the history of baseball in the Arizona Territory.

Touching on history will be the presentation of “Pursuing the Black-on-Gray: West Central

Arizona’s Ancient People.”

The Symposium is free and open to the public for all talks. Reservations are not required.

Symposium attendees are welcome to attend the Corral’s monthly dinner prior to the evening talk. Reservations and advance payment are required for the dinner, but neither are required if you only wish to attend the talk after the dinner. Seating may be limited.

Don’t Forget About Starlight Tours on Verde Canyon Railroad

Don’t Forget About Starlight Tours on Verde Canyon Railroad

Even though the biggest summer celebration is over, don’t forget there’s so much more to do around Prescott. Starlight tours on Verde Canyon Railroad continue through Sept. 17.

Deep red cliffs saturated with the golden glow of sunset and fresh green river breezes invigorate the senses during Verde Canyon Railroad’s popular Summer Starlight series. Scheduled for select Saturday evenings May through September, the Starlight rides depart the depot at 5:30 p.m. as the daytime temperatures fade and leave the route illuminated by the season’s late sunset.

A wide, wild blend of changing luminosity ranges between daylight, sunset, twilight, starlight and moonlight, serving up an amazing variety of vistas and an ever evolving twist to the scenery in this rare riparian canyon.  Each passenger may exit their climate-controlled passenger car to partake in the panoramic, all-encompassing outdoors via open-air viewing cars and become an integral part of the sights, scents and sounds of summer outside the city.

Returning to the depot via full moon brilliance, these evening excursions also highlight the Canyon’s wild creatures as many desert dwellers tend to be more active during the twilight hours of dusk and dawn. The summer season in Verde Canyon is as robust, heady and velvety as vintage wine. Dense with foliage, blooms and wildlife, this special wilderness showcases a landscape rare in Arizona.

The historic train features restored mid-century passenger cars, evoking the times of relaxed, stylish rail travel. Coach class is comprised of classic Pullman-style railcars revived from previous careers on commuter lines.

First-class seating provides well-designed living room-style comfort, with overstuffed chairs and loveseats allowing a more spacious atmosphere.

Amenities, such as courtesy appetizers and champagne with full bar options enhance the ride.

All passengers enjoy access to adjoining open-air viewing cars, their expansive panoramas being one of the train’s most popular features.

Summer Fun at Prescott’s Sharlot Hall Museum

Summer Fun at Prescott’s Sharlot Hall Museum

Plan now to attend the 19th annual Prescott Indian Art Market July 9 and 10 at Sharlot Hall Museum.

The museum’s garden area will be the host to this Indian-art show featuring exquisite carvings, ceramics, sculpture, paintings, hand-woven baskets, blankets, and distinctive jewelry.

Artists producing traditional and contemporary artwork are juried by distinguished American Indian artists.

Plan to walk among demonstrators as they carve Katsina dolls, hammer silver, and weave baskets and rugs. Native American dancers, singers and musicians will provide entertainment provided throughout the weekend in the outdoor amphitheater.

The Prescott Indian Art Market is one of the Southwest’s premier Indian-art Markets.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $10 for the general public and $8 for museum members. Those 17 and younger are free.

Sharlot Hall Museum is located in the heart of downtown Prescott, two blocks west of the Courthouse Plaza at 415 W. Gurley St. For information, visit www.sharlot.org.

Of course you can visit Sharlot Hall Museum throughout the year for an educational and cultural experience. The museum focuses on the appreciation of historical, social, and natural aspects of Arizona.

The museum is named after Sharlot Mabridth Hall, a self-educated and highly literate child of the frontier. Born October 27,1870, she traveled with her family from Kansas to the Arizona Territory in 1882. Her impressions of this journey remained with her all of her life. She loved ideas and the written arts and expressed her fascination with Arizona frontier life through prose and poetry.

In 1909, Sharlot was appointed Territorial Historian and became the first woman to hold territorial office. At about this time she was also very active in the national political arena, first as a lobbyist and later as a presidential elector. In 1927, Sharlot agreed to move her extensive collection of artifacts and documents into the Old Governor’s Mansion and open it as a museum.

Her diligent efforts inspired others to contribute to the preservation of early Arizona history. After her death on April 9, 1943 a historical society continued her efforts to build the complex that bears her name. In 1981 Miss Hall became one of the first women elected to the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame.
